Public Advisory: Fraudulent Emails Impersonating the City of Turlock Planning Division
The City of Turlock and the Turlock Police Department are warning residents and business owners of a fraudulent email scheme targeting individuals involved in Planning projects. In one confirmed case, a scammer impersonated a City of Turlock Planning Division employee, referencing legitimate project details and requesting a wire transfer of nearly $5,000.
The fraudulent message appeared to come from "City of Turlock Planning Division" but originated from a non-City domain and included a fake invoice and bank information.
How To Verify City Communication:
All official City of Turlock emails end with @turlock.ca.us
The City will never request payment by wire, Zelle, or gift card.
The Planning Division only accepts payments in person at City Hall (cash or check) or online via the secure payment portal.
To confirm an email or permit status, contact the Planning Division at: planning@turlock.ca.us or 209-668-5640.
If you are targeted or victimized, immediately contact your bank to report the fraudulent transaction. Contact the Police Department at 209-668-1200 and forward any suspicious emails to planning@turlock.ca.us for verification.
The City and Turlock PD are working together to investigate this incident and to help prevent others from falling victim. When in doubt, verify before you pay.
